I have had a lifelong interest in art, starting with drawing, cartooning, painting, and pottery.
Around twenty years ago I did a stone sculpture course and discovered my medium.
I like to take a piece of stone or wood and create three dimensional abstract forms with strong clean lines.
I mainly work with Mount Somers Limestone which comes from the Ashburton River gorge at the foot of the Southern Alps near Mount Somers. The stone has lain there for several million years, and once the outside weathered layer has been stripped back, that leaves an attractive white stone which lends itself to a smooth polished finish. I seal the sculptures with a water based masonry sealer to protect them from the elements.
I also carve figures, birds, and fish wall hangings from Totara posts and interesting stump wood.
I have attended stone symposiums at Mount Somers and Matamata, exhibited at various galleries , gardens, and four Hastings Wildflowers Sculpture Exhibitions.
I have exhibited at VIVA Gallery since it opened in 2011 and look forward to showing my sculptures in the new Viva Gallery in the heart of Napier.
