MAM ARTIST AOTEAROA
The first time I picked up a pencil with intent, I was living, temporarily, in an African village on the Kenyan Coast. I had taken one book with me, The Artist’s Way by Julia
Cameron and it changed my life. I was in my late 50’s and had discovered what inspired and stimulated me, what made me content, what made me happy – drawing has become a way of life.
My drawings, very eclectic in subject matter, begin with the germ of an idea and then slowly take on a life of their own, there is never a predetermined end result. It is an intriguing process as dense textural layers are added and subtracted continuously. Nature is a constant source of inspiration. Best expressed by the 19thC biologist Ernst Haeckel:-
“Where man meets the world, not with the tools he has made, but with the soul with which he was born, not like a hunter who seeks his prey but like a lover to reciprocate love. Where man and matter meet as equals before the mystery, both made, and maintained and destined to pass away, it is not an object, a thing, that is given to his senses but a state of fellowship which embraces him and all things”.
Why circles? Plato said that the circle is a perfect shape for creation and it alone forms a line of complete containment. This appeals to me.
